In the early 1900s, depositors ran on banks.
We fixed that with FDIC insurance and regulation.
In 2007-8, lenders ran on shadow banks.
We haven’t fixed that yet.
In fact we’ve made it worse.

February 4, 2026: Repo markets are critical to the functioning of the global financial system and they are vulnerable to significant financial stability challenges, said the Financial Stability Board. They allow excess borrowing (often at no cost and with multiple use of the same collateral), dense interconnectedness among financial firms, fire sales, and quick spreading of shock. Authorities need to take action, the board said.
